Frequently Asked Questions
What is the "sea opening" in Okinawa?
The ocean opening is when it is safe to swim and enjoy activities at that beach. Preliminary water quality testing, removal of debris and litter, and water temperature testing are conducted. Depending on the beach, lifesavers will be stationed in the swimming area, jellyfish nets will be installed, and marine activities and beach athletics will be available. It is still possible to walk on the beach and enter the ocean at your own risk before the beach opens, but you should exercise caution.
Can I swim in Okinawa beaches all year round?
When a beach is marked "swimmable year-round," it means that you can swim there year-round at your own risk. However, even in Okinawa, the water temperature drops in winter and can feel quite cold. On rare occasions when the weather in Okinawa in winter is fine, the sun is shining, and you can spend the day in short sleeves, you may see some people swimming at the beach.
Can I swim outside of the swimming season?
Swimming itself is not prohibited outside of the swimming period, provided that beach rules are followed. However, since there are no lifesavers on the beach, you must be very careful about your safety. Also, avoid swimming on days when waves are high or tides are fast, as it is dangerous. You are responsible for your own safety.
How can I save on admission fees to tourist facilities?
The best deals for Churaumi Aquarium are available at Onna-no-eki Naikui Market and Michi no Eki Kusuda, unless other companies offer a great deal. In addition, discount tickets from Klook, Asobuyu, and Jaran are also available. The latest information is provided on this page.
Can I enjoy the beaches of Okinawa in winter?
Okinawan beaches are so beautiful even in winter that you can enjoy just taking a walk or putting your feet up in the surf. My parents, perhaps because of their age, say, "It is best to look at the ocean when there are no people around. People swim even in winter, but the water temperature is low, so don't push yourself too hard, especially if you are not used to the cold.
Are beaches with jellyfish-proof nets safe?
On beaches where jellyfish prevention nets are installed, dangerous creatures such as habu jellyfish are less likely to enter. However, it does not prevent them completely. When entering the ocean, we recommend that you follow beach rules and wear a rash guard.
Are there any beaches you recommend for people with children?
Beach with shallow water and calm wavesare ideal for families with children. For example, Nirai Beach in Yomitan Village, Sesoko Beach on Sesoko Island, Emerald Beach near Churaumi Aquarium, and Azama Sun Sun Beach in Nanjo City are popular among families.
Are there showers and changing rooms on the beach?
Managed beaches in Okinawa and beaches adjacent to hotels often have showers and changing rooms. There may be a charge (100 yen to 300 yen) depending on the location. Natural beaches often do not have facilities, so it is helpful to have a 2-liter plastic bottle of water or a collapsible tank.
Can I enter the beaches in Okinawa at night?
Swimming is not allowed on controlled beaches outside of set times to prevent water accidents, and even if it were possible, it is not recommended.
What dangerous creatures should I watch out for in the Okinawan sea?
Be careful of jellyfish, starfish, and giant flying fish. On beaches without jellyfish nets, wear a rash guard and sandals, and do not enter the water barefoot.
What are the rules for trash disposal on Okinawa beaches?
In general, beach trash must be taken home; if you plan to have a BBQ or picnic, bring your own trash bags. Some beaches have special trash cans. If you find trash that does not belong to you, please pick it up.
Can I enjoy Okinawa's beaches even on rainy days?
If it is slightly cloudy, you can see the blue of the ocean from a distance. If it is cloudy or raining lightly, you can enjoy walking on the beach and picking up shells. Swimming may be prohibited on rainy days, so you need to check in advance.
Are beaches in Okinawa free?
Most beaches are free, but some may charge parking and facility fees. Check in advance.
