List of things to take with you on your trip to Okinawa explained
What you need/essentials
Cash, credit card
Although more and more tourist spots in Okinawa are accepting credit card payments, there are still some restaurants, such as teishoku-ya and senbero, that only accept cash. Be sure to bring cash as well.
cash card
Necessary to withdraw cash at local ATMs. ATMs are available at banks and convenience stores in Okinawa. Note that Mitsubishi UFJ Bank ATMs are not available in Okinawa.
boarding passes
Although there has been a considerable increase in the number of cases where electronic boarding passes are displayed on smartphones, please do not forget your paper ticket.
smart phone
Smartphones are now the go-to source for all kinds of information, and are essential for checking Google Map apps and travel information. You will probably be taking photos and videos, so don't forget them.
Driver's license (all)
This is required if you will be using a rental car. Everyone in the group who may drive must present a driver's license.
health insurance card
We strongly recommend that you bring your health insurance card in case something goes wrong during your trip, such as participation in an activity.
Medicine and anti-drinker
Prepare your own regular medicine and anti-sickness medicine in case you get sick.
Phone charger, etc.
A charger or mobile battery is essential. Be prepared so that your phone battery does not run out during your trip. Especially in Okinawa, where the weather is warm all year round, the heat tends to make the battery run down faster.
USB can be used on airplanes and in hotels. You may also want to bring an in-car charger in case you need to charge in the rental car (don't forget it when you return the car!). (Don't forget it when you return the car!).
Personal Needs
ETC Card
Okinawa has toll expressways; have your ETC card ready for smooth travel. Incidentally, the rate of ETC card ownership among Okinawa residents is the worst in Japan. Toll booths are crowded depending on the time of day.
extension cord
In some hotels, there may be only a few electrical outlets, or they may be located away from the bed. This is useful if you want to use a charger for your phone and camera at the same time. We also carry our PCs with us, so extension cords are a necessity.
guidebook
Convenient for checking information on sightseeing spots and gourmet food in Okinawa. Seeing them in advance will make your trip even more enjoyable.
paper coupons
Paper coupons can help you save money on your trip. If you need one, don't forget it!
Accessory
Since you are traveling, don't forget your accessories to make your outfit more fashionable. And don't lose them on the trip! (My wife probably lost her necklace at the hotel.)
hair iron
In hot and humid Okinawa, it is easy for my hair to fall apart. My wife always laments about it. A hair iron would come in handy!
Spectacle Cases
This is my #1 forgotten item. I live with contact lenses, but in my haste to get ready, I usually forget my glasses....
Contact Cleaning Solution
This is my #2 forgotten item lol. Don't forget the cleaning solution and the case! Worst case scenario, if I forget, I buy them at a convenience store.
Amazon Fire Stick
It is very convenient to bring an Amazon Fire Stick to enjoy watching videos freely at the hotel. Recently, more and more hotels have TVs with built-in FOD, but there are some that only have terrestrial digital TV. Families with small children may want to bring a tablet!
Portable Handy Fan
Great use during the hot season in Okinawa. A small portable fan is the best solution to the heat. When I see tourists in Okinawa, there are so many who carry a handy fan!
Clothing and Dress
Short sleeves, T-shirts
Okinawa is a subtropical area with a mild climate all year round; light, cool short sleeves and T-shirts are basically sufficient from April to October. In fall and winter, it gets cool or cold at night and during the day, so a parka or something similar will do. Down is almost never needed.
dress
One-piece dresses are recommended for women who can create a resort atmosphere. It looks great anyway, even for sightseeing or at the beach. Maxi-length dresses are recommended!
Light cardigan
A light cardigan is useful in case of over-air-conditioning or cool mornings and evenings. around October to March, it can be chilly at night due to the wind. one piece of clothing is a must.
Underwear & Socks
Be sure to prepare enough sheets for your stay so that you can stay comfortably for the length of your stay. I have only forgotten all of mine once (I bought them at a convenience store).
Daily necessities and hygiene products
adhesive plaster
It is a good idea to have some with you in case of sudden injuries or shoe abrasions. Especially when exploring the beach, you may get cuts without realizing it.
wet wipes
It is useful in places where you cannot wash your hands. It is convenient to carry them with you for hygiene purposes.
insect repellent spray
In Okinawa, where nature is abundant, you need to take precautions against insects. Don't forget to bring your own spray when you go out. (There are seriously tourists who think that Okinawa is bug-free. In fact, there are more bugs in Okinawa!)
sanitary items
A necessity for women. You may need it suddenly during your trip, so be prepared. You can buy them at stores, but it is safer to buy the ones you are familiar with.
baby equipment
Don't forget to bring the necessary items (diapers, baby food, etc.) to take care of your baby during the trip.
My Toothbrush
Hotels also provide toothbrushes, but it is comfortable to bring one you are familiar with.
basic skin-care products
Moisturizer and skin care are especially essential in Okinawa. It is a good idea to refill small travel bottles and carry them with you!
toilet articles
Shampoo, conditioner, and body soap may be available at the hotel, but it is a good idea to have something you are familiar with.
Sunscreen and UV protection
Sunscreen (UV care)
Sunscreen is necessary year-round in Okinawa!Bring a good sunscreen to protect your skin from strong UV rays. In summer, you will burn even if you are wearing clothes.
sunglasses
To protect your eyes from UV rays, sunglasses are a necessity in sunny Okinawa. It is not for coolness or anything, but seriously necessary!
hat
It is a good idea to wear a hat while sightseeing to help prevent heat stroke. Many men and women wear hats.
arm cover (e.g. chair)
Arm covers are also recommended to protect arms from the sun for long periods of time.
parasol
When going out in strong sunlight, protect your skin with a parasol.
Swimming and Marine Activities
swimsuit
Essentials for enjoying the beautiful beaches of Okinawa. Prepare your favorite swimsuit. By the way, it is true that many people in the prefecture go in with T-shirts.
sandal
Sandals for getting around on the beach or by the pool. Barefoot is scary. My wife cut her toe on a shell as a result of walking barefoot on the beach.
rash guard
Rash guards provide sun protection and warmth, making them ideal for activities in the ocean.
diving shoes
When walking on rocky areas, etc., it is strongly recommended to use marine shoes to protect your feet. Flip-flops that do not secure your feet due to their spine-like shape are scary.
bath towel
A bath towel with high absorbency is recommended so that you can wipe yourself off immediately after swimming in the ocean or pool. Well, a face towel is also OK.
Waterproof case
To protect your smartphone and other valuables at the beach, a waterproof case is an essential item.
beach bag
A beach bag is useful when going to the beach. Choose one made of material that can withstand getting wet.
Waterproof Pouch
Waterproof pouch for small items and valuables. Ideal for activities near water.
picnic plaid
Leisure sheets for the beach or picnics should be lightweight and easy to carry. A stylish round beach towel will look great in photos.
float
Necessary for children and beginners to enjoy the sea. Prepare floatation rings to enjoy the ocean safely. Hotels and beaches can rent them.
snorkel set
It is convenient to prepare a snorkel set in advance so that you can explore the beautiful waters of Okinawa. If you are looking for a snorkeling experience, rental is usually included in the price. If you are going in on your own, never go in alone. Every year, people die in water accidents.
goggles
Goggles to protect your eyes when swimming in the ocean are okay, even 100-yen goggles!
change of clothes T-shirt
A T-shirt worn over a bathing suit is convenient because it protects you from getting wet and allows you to change quickly.
Cool down gel
It is a good idea to bring a cool-down gel with you to cool your skin after sun exposure.
Photography Goods
single-lens reflex camera
Don't forget your SLR camera and peripheral equipment to capture the beautiful scenery of Okinawa in high quality.
active camera
Action cameras are great for capturing video during activities to preserve memories, like Gopro, Insta360, and DJI products.
Waterproof case for smartphone
A waterproof case is a good idea so that you can take pictures with your phone near water or underwater. However, familiarize yourself with how to use it beforehand.
selfie stick
A selfie stick is useful to easily take selfies and group photos at tourist spots.
Smartphone tripod
A tripod is useful for landscape and timer photography, and is a necessity for taking stable pictures.
Various chargers
Be sure to have a charger ready so that your camera or smartphone will not run out of charge.
