Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Okinawa's "Beach Opening"?

The “beach opening” refers to the time when it becomes safe to swim and enjoy activities at a particular beach. Prior to this, water quality tests are conducted, debris and trash are removed, and water temperature checks are performed. Depending on the beach, lifeguards are stationed in the swimming area, jellyfish-proof nets are installed, and marine activities and beach obstacle courses become available. Even before the beach opening, it is possible to walk along the beach or enter the water at your own risk, but extreme caution is required.

Can you swim at Okinawa's beaches year-round?

Beaches labeled “Open for swimming year-round” mean you can swim there all year long at your own risk. However, even in Okinawa, the water temperature drops in winter, and it can feel quite cold. On rare occasions in winter in Okinawa, the weather is nice, the sun is strong, and it’s warm enough to wear short sleeves—on days like that, if you go to the beach, you’ll see a few people here and there taking a dip.

Can I swim even when the swimming season is over?

As long as you follow the beach rules, swimming itself is not prohibited even outside the designated swimming season. However, since there are no lifeguards on duty, you must take every precaution to ensure your safety. Also, avoid swimming on days when the waves are high or the currents are strong, as these conditions can be dangerous. You do so at your own risk.

How can I save money on admission fees to tourist attractions?

Unless other companies are running exceptional promotions, the best deals for the Churaumi Aquarium are available at “Onna Station Nakayukui Market” and “Roadside Station Kyoda.” You can also save money by using discount tickets from Klook, Asoview, and Jalan. We’ll keep you updated with the latest information on this page.

Is it fun to go to the beach in Okinawa in winter?

Okinawa’s beaches are beautiful even in winter, so you can enjoy taking a stroll or simply dipping your feet in the water at the shoreline. My parents—perhaps because they’re getting older—say, “There’s nothing better than gazing out at the ocean when there’s no one around.” While some people do swim even in winter, the water is cold, so if you’re not used to the cold, be sure not to push yourself too hard.

Are beaches with jellyfish-proof nets safe?

At beaches equipped with jellyfish-proof nets, dangerous marine creatures such as box jellyfish are less likely to enter the water. However, these nets do not provide complete protection. When entering the water, please follow the beach rules and take precautions such as wearing a rash guard.

Are there any beaches you'd recommend for families with children?

A beach with shallow waters and gentle waves...are ideal for families with children. For example, Nirai Beach in Yomitan Village, Sesoko Beach on Sesoko Island, Emerald Beach near the Churaumi Aquarium, and Azama Sun-Sun Beach in Nanjo City are all popular with families.

Are there showers and changing rooms at the beach?

Showers and changing rooms are often available at managed beaches in Okinawa and at beaches adjacent to hotels. Depending on the location, there may be a fee (100 to 300 yen). Since natural beaches often lack such facilities, it’s convenient to bring a 2-liter plastic bottle filled with water or a collapsible water tank.

Can you go to the beach in Okinawa at night?

At managed beaches, swimming is not permitted outside of designated hours to prevent water accidents, and even if it were allowed, it is not recommended.

What dangerous marine creatures should you watch out for in the waters off Okinawa?

Be careful of box jellyfish, crown-of-thorns starfish, and devil scorpionfish. At beaches without jellyfish-proof nets, wear a rash guard and sandals or similar footwear, and avoid going into the water barefoot.

What are the rules for litter disposal on Okinawa's beaches?

As a general rule, you should take your trash home from the beach. If you’re having a barbecue or picnic, be sure to bring a trash bag. Some beaches have designated trash cans. If you see trash that isn’t yours, please pick it up.

Can you still enjoy Okinawa's beaches on rainy days?

If it's only slightly cloudy, you can still see the blue of the ocean from a distance. On cloudy days or when it's just drizzling, it's perfectly fine to enjoy a walk on the beach or collect seashells. Swimming may be prohibited on days with heavy rain, so be sure to check in advance.

Are the beaches in Okinawa free?

Most beaches are free to use, but some may charge fees for parking or facility use. Be sure to check in advance.
