Background to the Launch of This Project

Although the Nakagusuku Castle Ruins are a magnificent site that has retained its original form better than any other World Heritage site in Okinawa, they are not very well known among tourists.

As part of this project, we are hosting a state-of-the-art night walk at the Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, which are normally open to the public only during the day. By allowing visitors to experience the unique charm of the site at night—a time when it is usually inaccessible—we aim to widely promote its historical significance and beauty, and introduce more people to the allure of these ruins.

About the World Heritage Site: Nakagusuku Castle Ruins (Nationally Designated Historic Site; One of Japan’s 100 Famous Castles)

It is known for utilizing the eastern edge of the hills stretching from the northwest to the south of Nakagusuku Village as a natural fortress, and for having the best-preserved ruins among Okinawa’s more than 300 gusuku.
The castle is a mountain fortress with a multi-bailey layout, consisting of six baileys. The castle walls are primarily constructed of cut Ryukyu limestone blocks and feature beautiful curves that make use of the natural rock formations and the surrounding terrain. The high level of craftsmanship involved is considered artistic, and the castle is highly regarded from a historical perspective.
