The Journey to and How to Get to Kohama Island, the Oasis of the Yaeyama Islands

The Charm of "Kohama Island," Where a Serene, Unspoiled Landscape Stretches Out

Located in the heart of the Yaeyama Islands, Kohama Island is a place where Okinawa’s beautiful, unspoiled natural landscape remains vividly preserved—it even served as the setting for an NHK morning drama series. Step outside the resort grounds, and you’ll find “Sugar Road”—a straight path lined with sugarcane fields rustling in the breeze—and a village dotted with traditional houses featuring red-tiled roofs. This leisurely island pace, which lets you forget the hustle and bustle of city life, is Kohama Island’s greatest charm.
About a 25-minute ferry ride from Ishigaki Island! A boat trip where you can feel the sea breeze
Since Kohama Island doesn’t have an airport, the main gateway is the “Ishigaki Port Remote Islands Terminal” on Ishigaki Island. From there, you board a high-speed ferry and cross the emerald-green sea for about 25 minutes. As you stand on the ferry deck, basking in the refreshing sea breeze and watching the island come into view, a sense of excitement—that “a special vacation is about to begin!”—surges through you.
Take the shuttle bus from the port to the resort! The excitement leading up to your arrival

Upon arrival at Obama Port, the hotel’s complimentary shuttle bus will be there to greet you. After a 10-minute ride, the moment when the scenery suddenly shifts from the island’s tranquil landscape to a sophisticated resort setting is truly breathtaking. After checking in, you’ll explore the vast grounds in a private cart. As you make your way to your villa through tropical flowers and trees, you’ll be enveloped in a sense of exhilaration, as if you’ve stumbled into a completely different world.
*Please note that the departure and arrival ports may change depending on the weather, so we recommend checking the official information in advance.
A Private Space to Escape Everyday Life

The vast grounds and the overwhelming tropical resort atmosphere that immediately catch your eye
As you pass through the front entrance and step onto the grounds, you’ll be greeted by vibrant hibiscus flowers, lush greenery, and a blue sky stretching as far as the eye can see. The extraordinary scale of the 360,000 tsubo grounds creates an overwhelming sense of openness. Just taking a stroll through the grounds feels like the tropical breeze is gently washing away the stresses of daily life.
The luxury of all-suite accommodations! Enjoy blissful, private moments in a villa
All 60 guest rooms are luxuriously designed as villa-style suites. You’re guaranteed complete privacy without having to worry about noise from neighboring rooms. The “Deluxe Suite” I stayed in, which faces the lagoon, is particularly appealing for its spacious layout. In the late afternoon, I dozed off on the daybed by the window, enjoying a blissful moment completely undisturbed.
You can freely mix and match bath salts and Sanpin tea leaves to create your own custom scent and flavor, and you can also rent resort dresses and shirts for free!
Comfortable guest room designs that blend the natural beauty of Kohama Island with modern style
While the interior is based on a calm, modern design, vibrant wall art that captures the essence of Kohama Island adds a striking accent. The design is sophisticated yet exudes a comforting warmth. The space is so meticulously crafted for comfort that you’ll find yourself thinking, “I don’t want to leave this room.”
Island Time Spent at “Gajumaru Square,” a Mystical Haven of Healing
As you stroll through the grounds, your attention will be drawn to “Banyan Tree Plaza,” where a large, vibrant tree stands tall. It’s a soothing spot where “island time” flows gently—perfect for reading in the dappled sunlight or having a leisurely chat. At night, the soft glow of lanterns comes on, transforming the atmosphere into something magical and romantic—a complete contrast to the daytime.
Exquisite Activities That Stimulate the Five Senses

Choose whichever suits your mood! Two pools—one facing the front and one facing the beach
The resort features two distinct types of pools, which are the highlight of any resort stay. The lagoon pool, located near the front desk, offers a calm and elegant atmosphere with parasols lining the water’s edge.
Meanwhile, the pool on the beach side features an open design that lets you feel at one with the blue ocean stretching out before you. Sipping a cold drink on a deck chair while feeling the sea breeze will take your resort experience to new heights!Experience blissful relaxation while listening to the sound of the waves at the "kafu" barrel sauna with its breathtaking views
For sauna lovers, the “kafu” barrel sauna—with a view of the blue ocean right before your eyes—is an absolute must-try. Sweat it out thoroughly during a löyly session infused with the scent of getto—a fragrance unique to Okinawa—then step outside. As you soak in the “ocean-air bath” while taking in the sound of the waves with your whole body, the sea breeze gently caresses your flushed skin, guiding you to a state of “totonoi” (harmony) unlike anything you’d ever experience in everyday life.
After warming up in the sauna, you can either take a dip in the dedicated cold plunge pool or dive right into the ocean—either way is fine. Both left me feeling absolutely refreshed!
A Moving Morning Welcomed at the “Sunrise Ocean Lounge” Floating on the Sea
Even if it means getting up a little early, the “Sunrise Ocean Lounge”—floating right out in the middle of the sea—is well worth the trip. Savoring champagne and fresh fruit while having the breathtaking view—as the sky and sea gradually turn orange—all to yourself feels just like a scene from a movie. Another great perk is that drone footage is included, so you can preserve this moving morning scene as a cherished memory.
And then, just relaxing on the beach is a great option.
Feel the morning sea breeze all over your body. “Fresh Air Stretch” to awaken your mind and body
For a refreshing start to your day, we recommend “Fresh Air Stretching,” which takes place right in front of the beautiful ocean. As you slowly stretch your body while taking in the cool, crisp morning air and the soothing sound of the waves, you’ll feel the stiffness and fatigue built up over the days melt away. It’s the perfect way to refresh yourself by soaking up the energy of nature with your whole body.
Time spent experiencing the island’s culture and nature, such as at the Brown Sugar Lab and Flower Road
In the spring, you can take a stroll along the “Flower Road,” where a total of 18 varieties of flowers are in full bloom, and learn more about the island’s natural environment on a guided walk.
In addition, the “Brown Sugar Lab”—a spring-only event—offers a rich experience where you can discover your perfect brown sugar pairing from over 96 different combinations. It’s not just about staying overnight; the property is packed with activities that let you actively enjoy the culture and changing seasons of the Yaeyama Islands.
The Bounty of the Yaeyama Islands and a Romantic Evening

"Ooli Ooli": An Exquisite Buffet Infused with the Aromas of Yaeyama Spices
The buffet served at the “Ooli Ooli” restaurant features a variety of exquisite dishes that skillfully incorporate ingredients and spices unique to the Yaeyama Islands. The colorful, visually appealing dishes add a touch of glamour to your evening at the resort.
In particular, the “Brown Sugar French Toast” served for breakfast—with its gentle sweetness that spreads throughout your mouth—is a must-try that will have you coming back for seconds time and time again.
The starry sky and the sound of the waves provide the soundtrack! Enjoy the “Tingara Night Dinner” on the beach at night
If you’re looking to create a special evening, we highly recommend the “Tingara Night Dinner” on the beach at night. Surrounded by the soft glow of lanterns and with the sound of the waves as your background music, this multi-course meal is truly exceptional. After dinner, sink into one of the hammocks set up on the beach and gaze up at the star-filled sky stretching as far as the eye can see… It’s so romantic it will make you sigh—it’s sure to be a night you’ll never forget.
After dinner, we stopped by “Tingara Hammock” to lie back and gaze at the starry sky. It was a truly fulfilling day, from morning until night.
There are plenty of other activities and experiences available, so be sure to check out the official website!
