Kohama Island is located in the heart of the Yaeyama Islands. Rising in the center of the island is a scenic spot offering breathtaking views of the surrounding islands from a summit approximately 99 meters above sea level. The vast panorama—composed of emerald-green seas, blue skies, and lush green islands—is a special sight found nowhere else. It’s an essential destination for a sophisticated, adult-oriented trip where you can experience the true scale of nature without any sense of artificiality.

A panoramic view of the Yaeyama Islands! A 360-degree panorama from an elevation of 99 meters

From the observation deck at the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Yaeyama Islands—including Ishigaki Island, Taketomi Island, Kuro Island, Iriomote Island, Hatoma Island, and even Hateruma Island on clear days. With absolutely nothing to obstruct your view, using a wide-angle lens allows you to capture dynamic photos where the sky and sea seem to blend together. The contrast between the beautiful coral reef-filled sea and the lush green landscape is a sight you’ll never tire of gazing at.
About 300 steps to the summit: Things families with children should know

While breathtaking views await, you’ll need to climb about 300 steep steps to reach the observation deck. The climb takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but since the path involves constant ups and downs, carrying a small child up the stairs requires considerable stamina. Children in elementary school and older can enjoy the climb as an adventure, but we recommend wearing comfortable sneakers and proceeding at your family’s own pace, taking breaks along the way.
A clear, sunny day is the perfect time to take photos! Things to keep in mind during rain or strong winds

If you want to enjoy the vibrant ocean colors unique to Okinawa’s remote islands, a sunny day with plenty of sunlight is definitely the best time. To capture the “stunning, high-quality scenery” we want to showcase with your camera, the light is particularly beautiful from the morning through early afternoon when the sun is behind you. However, since there is nothing to block the wind near the summit, you’ll need to be careful not to let your hat or other items blow away during strong winds. In rainy weather, the stairs become extremely slippery, so it’s best to avoid attempting the climb.
Feel the island breeze on a rental bike! How to get there from the port
If you’re traveling by boat from Ishigaki Island, you’ll first arrive at the Kohama Island Ferry Terminal. The area around Kohama Port—where the terminal is located (and which is adjacent to another Kohama Port area where tour boats also depart and arrive, as well as the Kohama Island Boat Landing)—is home to plenty of shops offering bicycle and motorcycle rentals. From there, rent a bicycle and pedal toward the center of the island for about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the base of the mountain. While there is a parking lot available, taking your time to explore by rental bicycle is the quintessential way to enjoy Kohama Island.
Breathtaking beauty. Exquisite scenery that enhances a sophisticated island getaway

My husband and I actually hiked up there carrying our own gear, and at the top of those breathless stairs, we were greeted by a breathtaking view so stunning it instantly made us forget our fatigue. This isn’t just another tourist spot—it’s a landscape of true natural grandeur that adults who appreciate high-quality experiences will especially want to savor. Spending time gazing at the vast panoramic view of the Yaeyama Islands while being caressed by a gentle breeze was the ultimate healing experience—one that completely reset the stresses of daily life.
