At Shuri Castle Park, in preparation for the opening of the Shuri Castle Main Hall to the public on November 23, Reiwa 8, we will hold the “Tapestry of Bonds” event—a participatory initiative for park visitors—in collaboration with the Naha Traditional Textiles Business Cooperative (Shuri-ori).
During this event, held on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Saturday, August 15, Reiwa 8, through Tuesday, November 3 (a national holiday), visitors to Shuri Castle Park will take turns weaving on the loom to ultimately create a tapestry measuring 16.39 meters in total length. The design is planned to evoke the “floating path” leading to the Main Hall of Shuri Castle.
The journey of reconstruction—from the fire to the completion of the Main Hall—has been sustained by the warm support of so many people. This tapestry has been created as a “symbol of bonds” that connects the past to the future, with the sentiments of all those who have watched over and supported Shuri Castle woven into every single thread.
The completed tapestry is scheduled to be displayed in Shuri Castle Park as a symbol of our bonds with, and gratitude toward, everyone who supported the reconstruction of Shuri Castle.
