Frequently Asked Questions
What types of accommodations are available in Okinawa?
Okinawa offers a wide variety of accommodations, including private villas, high-end resorts, hotels with ocean-view suites, and luxury villas and cottages. We recommend choosing a place to stay that best suits your needs.
I'd like to stay at a hotel where I can see the ocean from my room.
The key phrase to keep in mind is “On the Beach Hotel” (meaning “by the ocean”). Make sure the room name includes “Ocean View” (the opposite term, “Green View,” means you can’t see the ocean or it’s hard to see). Some accommodations feature photos of Okinawa’s ocean in their promotional materials, but in some cases, these are simply photos of the beach closest to the property, so be sure to check the location on a map beforehand.
For more details, see “The Complete Guide to Choosing a "Hotel with an Ocean View" in Okinawa | 8 Tips for Finding a Place to Stay with an Ocean View"Please see [...].
Which is more convenient: a hotel near the beach or one in the city center?
If you want to make the most of a beach resort, oceanfront accommodations that offer a sense of privacy are popular in Onna Village, Miyako Island, and Ishigaki Island. If you’re sightseeing without a rental car, city hotels in Naha are convenient.
Are there any accommodations where I can avoid the crowds and enjoy a more private stay?
Yes. There are options such as standalone villas that can be rented out exclusively to a single group, resorts accessible only to a select few guests, and hotels with private beaches. While the prices are on the higher side, you’ll be able to enjoy a luxurious experience filled with a sense of exclusivity and privacy that far outweighs the cost.
How far in advance should I make reservations for resorts and hotels in Okinawa?
Since reservations at top-tier hotels and villas often fill up several months in advance, we recommend booking early. For private villas in particular, it’s best to book at least six months in advance. We also recommend booking hotels well in advance.
How can I keep accommodation costs down on a trip to Okinawa?
The best strategy is to avoid the peak season. It’s also a good idea to stay on weekdays and take advantage of early-bird rates or weekday discounts. In Naha, staying at a place that only includes lodging and eating out is a good option. If you’re staying at a place that only includes lodging in northern Okinawa Prefecture or on the outlying islands,
...and since dining options are limited, please make your decision based on all factors.
Should I include breakfast at the hotel?
At restaurants in high-end hotels, you can enjoy sophisticated dishes that showcase Okinawan ingredients or showcase the chef’s skills starting first thing in the morning. On the other hand, while some business and city hotels offer delicious breakfasts, others serve ordinary fare consisting mainly of frozen foods and pre-prepared items. If there are breakfast options nearby, you might be better off booking a room without breakfast.
Are there any accommodations where you can have fun even on rainy days?
Large resort hotels feature a wide range of amenities, including indoor pools, spas, and entertainment facilities, so you can enjoy your stay even on rainy days. In addition, some villas offer stylish accommodations that are just as appealing even when it rains.
What are the benefits of staying in Okinawa during the off-season (winter)?
Prices begin to drop gradually starting in October, and accommodation rates remain lower from mid-November through around March. Even in winter, temperatures hover around 20 degrees, so you likely won’t feel cold. However, on cloudy or windy days, it may feel as cold as 10 degrees, so be sure to pack a down jacket.
Are there any hotels with open-air baths or large public baths?
While some hotels in Okinawa offer guest rooms with open-air baths or large public baths, their numbers are limited. Perhaps that’s because Okinawa is a place to enjoy the ocean and nature rather than hot springs.
What are some recommended accommodations for couples?
Private villas available exclusively for one group and hotels with ocean views are popular. There are also accommodations with a romantic atmosphere designed for adults.
What are some good places to stay in Okinawa if you're planning a trip focused mainly on sightseeing and getting out and about?
If you're just looking for a place to sleep, guesthouses and business hotels offer better value for the money. That way, you can spend more time and money on sightseeing. Some resort hotels also offer packages for solo travelers.
